Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is looking for residents feedback on proposals for a major expansion of the Borough’s household recycling service.
The report sets out draft proposals for a full, weekly collection of five different recyclable materials, meaning that the majority of households should be able to recycle more than three quarters of their rubbish from the kerbside.
The main changes from the current refuse and recycling service would be the introduction of weekly household collections of food waste (which accounts for one-third of the contents of the average household bin) using sealed containers, and weekly collections of glass and plastics alongside using stackable recycling boxes.
Waste & Recycling collection proposed
- weekly food waste collection – specially designed locking food caddy (plus a small caddy for kitchen)
- weekly cans and plastic bottles collection (55 litre box)
- weekly paper and card collection (55 litre box)
- weekly mixed glass bottles and jars collection (44 litre box)
- alternate weekly residual waste collection – wheeled bin
- organic garden waste collection (fortnightly subscription service).
As the increase in recycling volumes will significantly reduce a household’s residual waist (non-recyclable materials that go into a landfill) this should also enable the collection of residual waste to move on to a fortnightly basis, which will also provide savings and enable the enhanced recycling service to be provided at no extra cost.
There will also be an increase in the variety of products collected from the Council’s recycling centres. The Council also aims to substantially improve the recycling services currently provided to residents living in flats.
