Detectives are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery in Redhill yesterday morning (Tuesday, 2 March).
Just before 11.30am a security guard was walking back to his van, which was outside Barclays Bank, Queensway, when a man holding a baseball bat demanded he hand over the cash box.
The security employee handed over the box and the robber got into a waiting grey Volvo XC90 and left the scene. He stole a substantial amount of money.
The guard was not injured.
The robber escaped in a grey Volvo XC90 which has been recovered in a nearby residential road. The suspect then got into a yellow flat-bed truck and left the scene.
Currently no description of the suspect is available.
Investigating officer, Detective Constable Kerry Akehurst said:
“The empty cash box has been recovered in Peterborough Road, Carshalton, and we will be carrying out a forensic examination of the Volvo to find out what evidence the robber left behind.
“It is possible two or three people were involved in this armed robbery which has left the security guard in total shock. I am urging members of the public to come forward and help us out with any information they may have relating to this offence and those responsible.
“If you were in Queensway, Redhill, at about 11.20am on Tuesday 2nd March I want to speak to you as you may have vital information.
“I am also very keen speak to anyone who was in nearby Lynwood Road, at around the same time, who may have seen men getting out of a grey Volvo XC90 and into a yellow flat-bed van and may not have thought anything was suspicious about it at the time.
“Finally, if you were out enjoying the sun in Poulter Park, Peterborough Road, Carshalton, at around midday on Tuesday 2nd March then I want to hear from you. The cash box was discarded there by three well-built youths so if you remember seeing them near the river bank I urgently want to talk to you.
“If you have any information, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, please call me because it could make all the difference to my investigation.”
Enquiries into this incident are on-going but anyone who can help is urged to call Surrey Police immediately on 0845 125 2222 quoting reference P10063854 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
