Station redevelopment and Waitrose plans approved by Council

Station plansThe major redevelopment plans for the station site were approved unanimously by the Planning Committee on Wednesday evening, 2nd October.

The plans, illustrated above, are the latest in a line of ambitious proposals for the site going back over 10 years - and these are the first plans to satisfy the various requirements for developing on such an important site.

The proposals include:

  • A new Waitrose supermarket
  • 150 flats
  • New ticket halls at both the front and rear of the station
  • 450 commuter parking spaces (more than currently exist)
  • 350 cycle parking spaces (double the existing number)
  • 10 taxi waiting spaces (the same as currently exist), with further taxi provision to be made elsewhere in the town centre
  • A £269,000 contribution to the Balanced Network transport improvements, work on which started last week
  • A combined heat and power (CHP) energy system to provide energy efficiently

All the documents comprising the application are available here, including a summary report.

Your local Conservative councillors, Natalie Bramhall, David Pay and Julian Ellacott, thank all local residents who have provided comments on the plans over the past 18 months, and have worked hard to try to get them all addressed in the final plans. Work should start on site in early 2014.

Shame the less thought through issues weren’t dealt with. Such as moving all the parking, drop off and Taxis to the back of the station but not providing a ticket office at the back, so everyone will have to make their way down to the front to meet a Human Being to deal with tickets.
