In a parliamentary debate on the performance of Govia Thameslink Railway and Network Rail today, Crispin Blunt MP has called on the Government to address the unfairness customers using the Redhill and Reigate routes are continuing to face due to service reductions and higher fares.
Explaining that the Department for Transport takes all the fare income collected from passengers using Southern services as part of the management contract in place, Crispin Blunt said in the debate:
“The Minister should use imagination and energy to address the unfairness rail users are facing with a rotten service.”
Mr Blunt supported electronic ticketing as a way to automatically adjust fares when delays and disruption deserve refunds.
He expressed concern about the planned closure of Merstham and Reigate ticket offices, which could make purchasing the correct and full range of tickets more difficult.
He also wrote yesterday to the Secretary of State for Transport, seeking a meeting and demanding again that the Government considers the compelling case for extending Transport for London Zone 6 to Redhill, Merstham, Earlswood, Salfords, Reigate and out to Gatwick Airport.
